Southern Wales and England

This is the view from the top deck of The Lodge. Imagine a deer being chased by hounds left to right across the green grass and the spectators betting on which hound will get to the finish post first. A deer can run flat out at 40mph for up to a mile without tiring. No mention is made of what happened to the deer at the end of the race! Deer coursing was run following a comprehensive set of rules written down by Sir Ralph Dutton in the late 1600s. This was probably the first set of written rules for any game or sport in Britain and possibly the rest of the world.
